Sri Lankan Hospitals To Go Paperless

FutureGov Asia Pacific has reported that doctors in Sri Lanka's government hospitals will soon be able to access patients' medical records electronically.

According to FutureGov, the Hospital Health Information Management System (HHIMS), developed jointly by the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and the Ministry of Health, stemmed from the Sri Lankan government's initiative to significantly improve service delivery to its citizens. Wasantha Deshapriya, ICTA's Re-engineering Government Programme Director, told FutureGov that the software was tested in five hospitals over a six-month period and is now ready to be installed in all government hospitals.

With the HHIMS, doctors and hospital staff will be able to access patients' records and perform tasks such as prescribing and dispensing medication electronically. "This user-friendly software enables accurate diagnosis and will be crucial in helping government hospitals go paperless. In addition, it also facilitates the production of many routine but essential hospital reports thus saving time and much paperwork. A positive indirect effect of the system is that the medical staff has more time to attend to their patients," Deshapriya told FutureGov.
