Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Role in Health

  • Disease Surveillance and Emergency Response
  • Population Health
  • Health Care Reform
  • Health Geoinformatics
  • Q&A

Disease Surveillance and Emergency Response
Protecting the population from disease and responding accurately to outbreaks are keys for public health.  The use of GIS can enable public health to recognize an outbreak and provide a measured response to control the disease spread.  Learn how GIS is being used in geographic surveillance and response to emergencies.

Presented by:
Xiaohui Zhang, PhD
Chief Scientist & Director of Asian Development
Scientific Technologies Corporation, USA

With 25 year experience, Dr. Zhang has dedicated himself to the application of information technology and decision making techniques to global public health, health care improvement, and ecosystem protection. He has served as chief scientist and chief technologist in leading development of many real world systems, including disease surveillance, emergency preparedness and response, comprehensive health care management and ecosystem modeling. He is the coauthor of book, “Biosurveillance, theory, methods and case studies”.

Population Health
The study of population health is focused on understanding disease and wellness of a community, province or country.  GIS can be used to enhance the understanding of the community health and disease, support policy making and management, and determine interventions to improve the community’s health.

Health Care Reform
Healthcare costs continue to rise and tools that can help to control those rising costs are needed.  This discussion will explore how GIS can be used to explore access to care, discover disparities in care and help inform health policy decisions.

Presented by:
Ann Bossard, BSBA, BSHSSE
Global Hospitals and Health Systems Specialist
ESRI

Ann Bossard has over 25 years of experience in implementing network systems, healthcare practice management, and business consulting.  For 15 years she has worked at ESRI promoting the value of GIS to public health and health care delivery providers.   Ms. Bossard delivers presentations around the world on the importance of GIS in health care, with a particular focus on the value of spatial accuracy in electronic health records and health data exchange.

Health Geoinformatics
Health Geoinformatics is an emerging discipline that uses a combination of scientific and modern geospatial technologies to investigate health issues by collecting, organizing, sharing, and presenting information about who we are, where we live, and how we live.  Learn how students are being educated in this discipline.
