CPOE is an ignition key to clinical processes. In Japan, more than 80% of large hospitals have CPOE. CPOE brings us patient safety by removing misreading of handwritten orders, and shortens long waiting time. Thoughtful implementation of CPOE and streamlining of its data flow to match real-world workflow provides a powerful foundation to better quality and efficiency of services. Excerpts from a decade of CPOE development at the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo, Japan will be used to illustrate key aspects for successful CPOE and use of its data towards continuous improvement of clinical processes.
